One of the first stages in the marketing process is to identify how effectively an organisation is performing and what internal factors may influence its success. This is usually conducted using a SWOT analysis. This stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

Strengths and weaknesses are internal factors within the organisation. Opportunities and threats are outside the control of the organisation e.g. products offered by competitors.
Strengths could be:
- Location
- New product or service unique to your organisation
Weaknesses could be:
- Location
- Quality of goods or services
- Reputation
Opportunities could be:
- Mergers or joint opportunities
- New market
- New market formed from the vacation of a competitor
- New product
Threats could be:
- New competitor
- Price war
- Competitor has a new product or service
