» Topic 5 - Sectors and Partnershipsin the leisure industry

Overview

An important factor is the inter-relationship between the sectors and how this will affect its operation in terms of defining and meeting objectives. The three sectors have been defined as:
• the private sector
• the public sector
• the voluntary/not for profit sector, made up of large and small organisations that aim to promote a worthwhile cause.

You need to understand how these different sectors inter-relate to meet the needs of the leisure industry and the partnership between the sectors.

How will I be assessed?

Level 1 - Little or no reference to sectors/inter-relationships

Level 2 -Identify at least one of the main sectors and begins to identify inter-relationships

Level 3 - knowledge of all the sectors and detailed understanding of how they inter-relate to meet the needs of the leisure industry

Level 4 -knowledge of all the sectors and fuller understanding of how they inter-relate to meet the needs of the leisure industry

Assignment

1. Examine the 3 sectors and show how they inter-relate.

Assignment Support

Within the leisure industry there are three main sectors. These are:

  • public (national and local government)
  • voluntary
  • private

1. You need to demonstrate an understanding of all three.

2. You need to demonstrate a detailed understanding of how and why these sectors interrelate with each other. Examples include the The London Marathon and the KC Stadium, Hull

You should also look into Public Private Partnerships. The BBC website provides an explanation of these here along with case study examples. Another case study example is Sidcup Leisure Centre.

You should also check out Private Finance Initiatives. Provide real life examples of how and why sectors interrelate in the LEISURE INDUSTRY. You can find out more about these, including examples on the BBC news website.

There is an online database of partnerships (not all are lesiure - you will have to look for appropriate partnerships) here: http://www.partnershipsuk.org.uk/PUK-Projects-Database.aspx then click advanced search. On the advanced search click the tick box for project sector and select all leisure. Then click search. You will then be provided with a range of examples. An overview is given of each. You could choose several then investigate them further.

Country Sports Partnerships are another example of how the sectors can work together. Cheshire and Warrington Sports Partnership provides lots of information.
